Sambazon's frozen acai bowls are a truly unique experience from a company centered on sustainable practices. They knew that stock plastic packaging wouldn't do their product justice, and sought to turn heads on shelf with compostable packaging that carried their brand.
Molded paper pulp was in mind from the start to convey the earthy feel of the brand in a fully compostable package. The challenge was designing a structure that presented both the frozen acai and granola separately in a distinct way. We drew reference from pottery and carved wooden bowls found in the Amazon region that the brand calls home.
Sambazon launched the new compostable package in October of 2019. The chosen concept was a spin on a typical flip compartment tray that mimics the shape of hand-crafted vessels while saving space. Embossing in the mold adds branding touches inside and out that nod to its Amazonian inspiration. The new format slips into a paperboard band and can be either stood up or laid down on shelf.
